Americans spend more than $22 billion every year on air conditioning. Home owners can save money on air conditioning by replacing windows and calculating costs before purchasing air conditioners.

According to US Dept. of  Energy web site:  Two-thirds of all homes in the United States have air conditioners. Air conditioners use about 5% of all the electricity produced in the United States, at an annual cost of more than $11 billion to homeowners.

As a result, roughly 100 million tons of carbon dioxide are released into the air each year -- an average of about two tons for each home with an air conditioner. To learn more about air conditions, explore our Energy Saver 101 infographic on home cooling.

Existing home sales in the USA are about 5.5 million per year.

During summer, it freezes water at night when it's colder outdoors, to let the ice melt during the day when it's hotter outdoors.

During winter it lets cold outdoor air into the refrigerator/freezer to save electricity.

During spring and autumn it saves electricity too because outdoor is usually (especially at night) colder than indoor.  It also can freeze water at night to let it melt during the day to save even more electricity.
